My heart goes out to you and your daughter. I have very good experience of the fact that doctors aren't always right. We should all trust our own instincts too. I'd say to either strongly express your disappointment and hurt about how you were treated with your local health authority in a letter, and especially face to face, or if you feel it's warranted get yourselves a solicitor to sort out the grievences. If you can't afford one just talk to the Citizen's Advice Bureau. I hope they're both well now!My grand child, who 7 months old took ill aweek ago last weekend, but the on call doctor will not come out,?
ask to see the patient charter tell them this treatment is not good enough and report them and the doc that would not come out
Contact the surgery to find out how to complain about the doctor who was covering nights and weekends. It may have been an agency they use but they can tell you who it was and can give you details of how to complain. Ask to talk to the practice manager as that is the person who can give you the information.
you have to be very insistent to get them to do a house call, but you probably get better care and diagnosis going straight to hospital anyway, i wish you well and hope she gets better soon
Ok, I'm trying to sort this out...your grandaughter is ill, your daughter..her mother, is in the wheelchair and the hospital wouldn't accept the granddaughter because he mother is in a wheel chair? i would see a lawyer about that one...that;s dicrimination....not really big on law things, but I know that is WAY outside the hipocratic oath.

Ok..your granddaughter is sick and she has lumps on her neck....ok depending on the location of the lumps, they are probably swollen lymph nodes..which is common with most infections..she needs antibiotics or even low grade steroids depending on what infection she has. It could be just about anything from a common cold to the flu. If she still them, it could be an infection of her tonsils...

If the hospital will not take her in the emergency room, you need to find a family doctor in the phone book and schedule an appointment...but she needs to see a doctor sometime...

and about that not admiting her and the wheelchair thing...you need to talk to a lawyer about that.

good luck

OK...so if you are in the UK....why are you on the US site...there is a uk.answers.yahoo.com .... Maybe they would be able to help you about a country thats 3,000 miles away from this one.
If you are in the UK then telephone 08454647 they will sort something out for you.

You have every right to a doctor to come out for you. Even without your exceptional circumstances the on-call doctor must make home calls to children and the elderly if they are unable to make it to the hospital. If you have anymore trouble threaten to talk to a solicitor about suing. You are well within your rights. Get them out.

Good luckk I hope it is OK xxx

Just to add to the American contributors, in the UK doctors do make house calls it is not a waste of resources, we have the NHS!
I am not sure if it is anything like our Docs are ';on call'; here in the US, but on call means on call at the hospital. It is the doctor who overseas the medical patients after the ER doctors admit the patient untill the patients normal doctor is able to come in. On call docs are not on call to individuals houses but instead they are on a shift covering the hospital for anyones Dr. that is not there at that point in time, which is why I would guess that they told you to bring her in to the hospital. For example every doc who admits a patient can not be there for their patient 24 hours a day 7 days a week every week of the year so they take turns being ';on call'; so that the patients can still receive the medical care they need. As for transferring your granddaughter to another hospital they are doing this to give her the best care she can have. Not all hospitals have the same facilities or specialists. As for your daughter, unless she was sick and needing to be transferred to the same hospital there would be no reason they would have to transport her there with the baby. Though it is sad, the responsibility of the hospital is to make sure the ill child gets treated and the transportation of the mother is not a concern of theirs.

Michelle Z- Yopu are totally wrong! Even here in the US we have docs that make house calls, nurses as well!

There are physician services that do house calls but this doesn't sound like your case, due to the fact that you did bring her in to a hospital and they transferred her to another. It sounds like you needed to take her there and as if a house call would not have been enough.

I was irritated a couple weeks ago when we had to ship a newborn but the mother who just gave birth had to stay at our hospital. Even though the mother was admitted as well there was no medical reason to ship her where her baby was going. Things like this irritate me to no end.
oh doctor,

come out come out wherever you are...
unfortunatley this happens alot now i have to take my daughter 2 a ';primary care unit'; miles from where i live, i dont drive and dont always have money for a taxi. but in ur case they refused 2 take ur daughter, that i think they can be done for speak to citizens advice to see where u stand. good luck
what is this with a Doctor coming to you? don't wait for the Doc to show up - run to his office or a hospital for help
that is awful behaviour how could they do that, surly a mother needs to be with the child at all times ... my daughter was close to dying last year and i wouldnt let her out of my sight ...only once did i allow them to take her away because i knew i couldnt watch much more.... i feel for your daughter , i would have expected that a hospital of all places can fascilitate the needs of those in wheelchairs....disgraceful... i hope your granddaughter will be ok .xxx
I don't know, but I will pray for your family.
am I to believe that they turned your grandaughter away because your daughter is in a wheel chair, this is not acceptable and I would right to someone about this, about the on-call doctor not coming out to see your grand daughter, I can relate very much to this as I once phoned the on call doctor and told him my son had a temp he said how do you know, did he think I was stupid, he did not come out and told me to take him to my own gp the following morning which I did where by my gp immediately admitted him to hospital for a week. but I was too naive then to do anything about it but if it was today I would complain. Good luck.
Legally the doctor is not obliged to do a home visit, it is entirely their decision as to whether they feel one is warranted or not. These days they commonly ask you to take the patient to an 'out of hours' surgery as they can see several patients in the time it takes to do one home visit. They mostly only visit terminally ill patients at home or people who are really too ill to be taken out.

That said, although they have no legal obligation to home visit, if anything untoward happened to the patient and it could be proved that a home visit would have prevented it, then the patient would have a case against the doctor.

I sympathise with your daughters predicament Bert, it sounds as though a little common sense could have been applied here. It may be worth her having a word with her local PALS (patient liaison service) to see where she stands in view of her disability should this situation arise again. If you phone NHS Direct (08454647) they will be able to give you the number for PALS in your area.

Good Luck
are you in the uk?

try contacting a service called PALS - Patient Advice and Liaison Services.

your local doctors surgery, or even the hospital reception, will have the information and the people at PALS will take you through the steps of making a complaint

they are very helpful - not connected with the health service, like doctors or nurses, but independant people who are trained to research things like this and take you through the process.

good luck - and i hope your granddaughter gets well soon.

sorry - michelle z is totally wrong!! doctors DO come to your house in the UK - they have regular house calls every morning and at our surgery as long as you phone before 10am and have a valid reason a doctor will come to your house.
go to a children's hospital much better my son has crohns disease spent 101 days in Phoenix chilDren's hospital best place sounds like you need a new dr. bless you and your gran daughter I hope it works out for you
Doctors do not make house calls. That would be a waste of resources, not to mention legally dangerous. The time it would take a doctor to go to someone's house and then to get back to the hospital could be used to see and help more patients.
