I have just been given a 10week old budgie which will not fly or chirp does any one know if it is ill?

It's probably feeling a bit freaked out. It's little more than a baby, has been taken away from its parents and siblings, transported to a strange place.

Keep it quiet and give it a chance to settle. A mirror would be nice so that it can see another budgie - as someone said, if it's a girl she won't be as noisy as the male birds. It takes a bit of practice to sex a very young bird.

It will sleep longer than an adult, like all babies. Put it to bed early with a cloth over its cage to keep out some of the light and make it feel secure. Make sure it always has plenty of clean water and keep its seeds free of husks. Millet spray is a good treat.

If it isn't any livelier tomorrow, think of getting it checked over.

(Why won't Yahoo let me give the male its proper name?)I have just been given a 10week old budgie which will not fly or chirp does any one know if it is ill?
YES it's ill for it;s mummy,I have just been given a 10week old budgie which will not fly or chirp does any one know if it is ill?
mine wouldn't for about three weeks. some budgies take longer than others to become accustomed to their new home and new owners.
Has anyone clipped his wings? He isn't very old at all so he may just be frightened of the new environment. If his wings were clipped before he learned how to fly this could also be the problem. Hard to say without more info. As one of the other answerers said give him some apple or a bit of carrot or corn or peas...do not feed the bird lettuce as it will cause him to get the runs and dehydrate. You can give him a wee square of romaine lettuce or spinach or kale but no regular lettuce and only the others I mentioned once a week or so. They can have all the corn and peas they want and apple.
well, if you have a female that would be why. females are more quiet yet male are more likely to chrip a lot. males are a bit narcisstic i guess. and if it's on your hand and doesn't fly, that just means it feels safe in that area. they tend to get a bit freaked out if they feel endangered.
It sounds like it might be ill. I would take it to an Avian Vet, which is a specialist veterinarian who studied birds much more than even Exotic animal Vets. I've been burned by taking my cockatiels to anything less than an Avian expert.

Also make sure the area your parakeet is in is large enough for her to fly in. most cages commercially available aren't.

Make sure she is getting the proper diet. A pellet diet made by Zupreem or Kaytee should be just the trick. Mine only get the organic, uncolored pellets from Kaytee and they like it just fine. Seeds are sinply not enough nutrition for pet birds - it's like giving them candy All The Time.

She should be bright-eyed and her stools somewhat clumpy, like wet mashed-potatoes. It's pretty common for birds to experience diarrhea when going through a stressful experience, like traveling to a new home.

10 weeks old? Is she even weaned from formula and on real solid foods yet?

And since she's a baby, now is a great time to introduce her to fresh fruits and vegetables. My parakeets liked fresh corn and freshly washed lettuce.
he is probably just scared of his new environment. give him a week or so and if he doesn't seem any better it may be a good idea to get him checked by a vet. usually around $50 for a first time checkup
Here's a baby bird just put in a strange NEW environment ... give the little guy a chance to get comfortable and feel safe in the new place. These symptoms will probably fade in a few days.
when i first brought my budgie home it didn't tweet, chirp, or fly for the first few days it was here, once they get used to the new enviroment it'll start chirping, and flying i've had mine since may 07 ( one week before mothers day )and he chirps all the time now, he'll chirp to the birds that are outside when we have our windows open, i've got a play stand on top of his cage, it's got a ladder a rope with a big plastic toy attached to it, and 2 bells and a a perch and i'll open his cage door every morning, and he'll eventually come out and observe he'll stand on the door frame and look around and he does this funny head bobbin' thing then he'll venture up the cage and get on top and climb up the ladder and sit on the perch and he's happy and content all day he'll get back in his cage when he's ready to eat or take a nap
could be feeling strange with the change of environment. Give him a few days to settle in
check with the vet
